Smart pools: control everything from your phone

Automation • February 2026 • 5 min read

"Pool automation" sounds like something from a display home — but in 2026 it's genuinely affordable, and the most common reaction we get after installing it is "why didn't I do this years ago?" Here's what it actually does and what's worth automating first.

What pool automation actually means

One app (or voice command) that controls your pump speeds and schedules, chlorinator output, heating, pool lights and even water features. No more walking to the equipment shed to fiddle with timers you set once and forgot.

The three systems we install

Hayward OmniX / OmniHub

The most complete ecosystem: variable speed pumps, AquaRite chlorination, heating, lights — all in one app, plus Alexa and Google voice control. New Hayward VS pumps now ship OmniX-ready out of the box.

Zodiac iAquaLink

Built into the eXO iQ chlorinators and Z400 iQ heat pumps. If you're already buying Zodiac gear, WiFi control often comes free — you just need someone to connect it properly.

AstralPool Connect / ChlorinatorGO

The Viron range talks Bluetooth and WiFi: pump speeds, chlorinator output and heat pump temps from your phone. The eQuilibrium model even manages pH and chlorine automatically.

Start here: the single best-value automation upgrade is a WiFi chlorinator with pump control (Zodiac eXO iQ or Hayward AquaRite + NG). It replaces two timers, adjusts itself to water temperature, and tells you when something's wrong — before your pool goes green.

What does it cost?

Entry-level smart control starts lower than most people expect — often less than a robot cleaner — especially if you're already replacing a chlorinator or pump. Full automation (pump + chlorinator + heating + lights) is a bigger investment but transforms a pool into something you manage from the couch. Bring your equipment list in and we'll quote the options honestly, including what we'd skip.

Will it work with my old equipment?

Often, yes. Modern controllers can switch older pumps and lights via relays. You won't get speed control on an old single-speed pump, but scheduling and remote on/off usually work fine. We check compatibility before quoting — no surprises.

Ready to automate your pool?

We install and configure Hayward, Zodiac and AstralPool systems — and teach you the app before we leave.
